HCMS Novel Ideas
“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”
Joseph Addison, ca 1709
Novel Ideas is a seventh and eighth grade class at Hill Country Middle School, Eanes ISD, in Austin, Texas. This READING-FOR-FUN course is a semester elective designed to foster a life-long enjoyment of reading by providing students with time in a busy school day to read books of their choosing. The class focuses on quantity–I encourage them to devour fun books and become voracious readers. As an English teacher, I know that they will be provided plenty of classics and literature to study along the way. Research shows that ALL types of reading improve a variety of language arts skills.
Students receive a grade based on the number of pages read during the semester, class participation during discussions, response journals emphasizing higher level thinking skills, book talks, electronic book reviews, and podcasts. I hope that this blog TheLibraryShelf will provide an exciting forum for demonstrating the students’ love of reading.
I love this class and Mrs.Northington. I love that I can read so much and that I can do so much more time to do all the important home work for all my classes. I love how you can always go to the library at any time and that the library is so close to here. I absolutly love this part of the of this schooland all the teachers.
I’m liking this class a lot i get to finish all the books i don’t have much time to read.
